The Silver Birch – Betula pendula – is a graceful native tree recognised for its distinctive white, peeling bark, light open canopy, and delicate, triangular leaves. Its airy foliage allows light to filter through, encouraging wildflowers to thrive beneath. Silver Birch supports a wide range of wildlife, hosting hundreds of insect species and providing seeds for birds such as siskins and redpolls.
All our trees are grown using organic inputs and are peat free.
Growing Instructions:
-
Soil: Prefers well-drained, sandy or light loam soils, but will tolerate poorer soils and slightly acidic to neutral pH. Avoid heavy waterlogged ground.
-
Sunlight: Thrives in full sun but will grow in light, dappled shade.
-
Watering: Water regularly when young, especially during dry spells. Mature trees are relatively drought-tolerant.
-
Planting: Remove competing plants within a 2ft radius. Plant in a hole just larger than the plug and at the same level as the surrounding soil. Firm in around the roots and water well. Apply a 3-inch layer of weed-free mulch (ideally bark chip). Keep the base weed-free for the first few seasons and protect from pests (e.g., voles, deer).
-
Growth Rate: Fast-growing; can reach 15–25m. Typically lives 60–80 years, though occasionally longer.
