The Pedunculate Oak – Quercus robur – also known as English Oak, is one of the most iconic and majestic native trees. It is distinguished by its broad, spreading canopy, deeply lobed leaves, and acorns borne on long stalks (peduncles). Revered for its strength and longevity, the Pedunculate Oak supports more species of wildlife than any other native tree, making it a cornerstone of woodland and parkland habitats.

All our trees are grown using organic inputs and are peat free.

Growing Instructions:

  • Soil: Prefers fertile, heavy clay or loamy soils but will tolerate a wide range, including slightly acidic or alkaline conditions. Avoid very dry or waterlogged sites.

  • Sunlight: Thrives in full sun to partial shade.

  • Watering: Water regularly when young during dry spells. Once established, it is hardy and low-maintenance.

  • Planting: Remove competing plants within a 2ft radius. Plant in a hole just larger than the plug and at the same level as the surrounding soil. Firm gently around the roots and water well. Apply a 3-inch layer of weed-free mulch (ideally bark chip). Keep weed-free for the first few seasons and protect from browsing animals (e.g., voles, deer).

  • Growth Rate: Moderate to slow-growing; can reach 20–40m and live for many centuries, often over 500 years.
